Lithium-ion batteries have become an indispensable part of modern life, powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems. As the demand for these batteries continues to grow, so does the need for efficient and sustainable recycling methods. To address this, advanced automated systems have been developed to recycle lithium-ion batteries, ensuring that valuable materials are recovered and environmental impacts are minimized.

1. Introduction to Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling

Lithium-ion batteries are composed of several critical components, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, which are all valuable and can be reused. However, the process of recycling these batteries is complex due to their chemical composition and the potential hazards involved, such as thermal runaway and toxic emissions. Traditional manual disassembly and recycling methods are not only labor-intensive but also pose significant safety risks. This has led to the development of automated systems – lithium battery recycling machines – which can handle the entire recycling process more efficiently and safely.

The feeding system includes a feeding conveyor for conveying waste lithium batteries to the shredding and crushing system.

The shredding and crushing system includes a shredder and a crusher connected to the feeding conveyor for crushing waste lithium batteries into fine particles.

The sorting system includes an air separator and a diaphragm induced draft fan for separating positive electrode materials, negative electrode materials, and current collectors. The diaphragm system includes a diaphragm box and a diaphragm induced draft fan for collecting diaphragms. The crushing and grinding system includes a crusher and a grinder connected to a magnetic separator for crushing and grinding positive and negative electrode materials into powder.

The screening system includes a linear screen and a collector connected to the grinder for screening positive and negative electrode materials and collecting them in the collector.

The pulse dust collector is used to collect dust generated during the crushing and grinding process to protect the environment.

The air purification system can purify these harmful gases to meet emission standards and reduce pollution to the environment.

The discharged waste lithium batteries are firstly sent to the shredder through a conveyor for shredding. The shredded battery materials are subjected to high-temperature pyrolysis in a cracking furnace. The organic matter inside the lithium battery is decomposed by controlling the temperature and time to further release valuable components. The materials after de-powdering are sent to the crusher for secondary crushing. A large amount of black powder is collected after passing through a rotary screen. The remaining copper, aluminum and battery shells are separated from the metal battery shells by a magnetic separator at the discharge port of the screening machine. The remaining positive and negative electrode materials are conveyed to the grinder for grinding. A small amount of black powder is screened out by a circular vibrating screen on the grinder. The ground positive and negative copper and aluminum materials are separated by an airflow separator. At this point, the copper, aluminum, black powder and diaphragm in the lithium battery are effectively separated and recycled.
